If you are a realist you may believe that probably nothing will change whatever you say or do. You’ve been there and done that so many times. People talk with enthusiasm about how the situation could be improved and then do absolutely nothing except continue to moan about it. It’s frustrating when you know how things could be improved and you have worked out the steps to make it happen.
Then you and the others involved do absolutely nothing except moan about it. You are an expert at making excuses, such as ‘if I do that, so and so will be offended or upset’ or ‘my colleagues don’t want what I want so I must be wrong.’ You are expert at reading people’s minds and are sure you can foretell their reaction to what you might do. You need to recognise and acknowledge your present situation without letting it stop you making suitable changes.
It might be quite a juggling act to decide what you can let fall and what you have to keep in the air. Often, the first step to make a change in your life, involves talking to the people involved and making a request of them. Don’t expect them to be able to read your mind. It doesn’t help anyone to complain without making what you want very specific. Tell them what you would like, by when and ask specifically if they are prepared to do what you ask. So, what is your resistance to making the changes you want, really about? It may be fear, apprehension about change, anxiety of taking a risk, losing sleep that your solution may not work. You want to be absolutely sure before you make a move. But can you ever be 100% certain? If you don’t try how will you ever know?
