In theory it doesn’t matter where you are if you want to make changes in your life. However in practice it is vitally important that you choose the time and place which seems right for you and what you want to do.

If you know exactly what you want to do and how you will do that and yet you’ve been procrastinating for ages and saying ‘it’s not the right time to make those changes at the moment,’ then perhaps you need to think about where you are and where you would like to be.

Just being in a different place can change your mood and the way you view the world. When you want things to be different it can be a challenge to try to imagine doing that different thing in the same place as you are at the moment. You often need to excitement of being in a different physical place in order to experience a different emotional place.

So if you feel stuck in a rut you can try:

  1. thinking about what to do while you stand in a different part of the same room. Even this subtle shift of place can have a profound effect on the way you understand a situation. If that isn’t much help then go to a completely different place. Go out for the day to somewhere entirely differently and take a walk while you consider your options and what you could do. This is best done on your own or with a non judgemental companion who will allow you to talk about the pros and cons without trying to put their own pointy of view onto your musings.
  2. decide  on  your very first simple step you must take on the way to the big changes you would want to make. Doing anything differently can help move you forward and stop you from remaining stuck.
  3. do something different which doesn’t seem directly related to your desired outcome but indicates you are getting ready for change. Perhaps you could have your hair cut in a new style or buy an item of clothing in a colour different from that you wear usually. Anything which might indicate to your subconscious mind that you are preparing yourself  for change.
  4. take some more exercise because this releases endorphins which will calm you and help you gain a new perspective on your life and thus be more able to make the changes you want.
  5. stop worrying about the possibility of failure. Although it’s true that you won’t fail if you never try, it’s also true that unless you make a start you will never be able to achieve what you want.
