A great way to start writing is using a word as a prompt. You could have a box of words and pick one each day and see what happens when you start to write.

The profession of Medicine is quite straight jacketed in terms of
Career projection: Although I am now out of date it used to be house officer,
Senior house officer followed by registrar , senior reg and consultant.

However this does not suit everyone for all sorts of reasons.

One of the problems however with departing from the straight jacket is the response of
Those who have remained within it.

Yet it is possible to survive and prosper outside the straight jacket but it may
Be harder work than remaining within it.

Harder but of course in surmounting it one achieves many new competencies and skills.

Goal setting in positive terms rather than avoidance / escape
Is clearly important.

Sometimes though the vision is difficult to clarify. I like though the idea of
A little every day.

I sense and indeed know that Susan herself has thought well out of the
Box and indeed achieved much if not all of her vision.

I tend to like force field diagrams - although I am quite sure they fit into
Susan`s view of these matters. It is though a realistic way of assessing
Factors helping and those hindering change.

What I learn though from Susan is that there is no substitute for
Having developed a vision towards which you are pointing. The force
Field diagram may show these factors for and many factors against but
Nevertheless the vision remains.

I am not a great beliver in compromise on every occasion - although certainly we must all compromise and listen to our colleagues appropriately particularly within the multi-disciplinary teams we now work within in Medicine.
What I like about this is the encouragement to keep the dialogue open. It is the best way forward for one and all although it is far too easy to get into dichotomous fixed positions which are not good for either the present or the future.
Grateful for tips.

One of my struggles with this sort of approach is that it can easily become over-regimeted - and leisure time turns into work.
Having written that there is a balance to be reached and am indeed writing on a Sunday morning where I have ideas as to what to do although am also enjoying a rleaxing morning.
Thank for the tips.

Coaching seems expensive for those of us of a parsimonious disposition!

WIthin Medicine there are a few of you "out there" and the fees vary.

Interestingly fees of coaches where the coach is not medically qualified are not much different.

Given our high earning power!! that means that dr coaches are good value!

I sense that there are many benefits to someone coaching who is medically qualified ( as we all are) although there may also be advantages of using someone well outside.

Gd wishes Clive

Chunking is of of course a well known tool of the psychologist. I recall being well impressed by the progress that my psychiatric patients used to make with a psychologist keen on chunking!

Doing it yourself..................

This may be less easy.

I am though an inveterate list maker and this is a form of chunking. I then prioritise the list according to need working my way through it.

What I like here though is the ten minute advice. I am currently working through a long and troublesome issue needing research in the context of a post graduate course. Whilst I am keen to "get it done now' there is considerable benefit in pacing oneself in the way that chunking tends to suggest.

Most useful - as always!
