Being assertive

One of the most important skills to learn when you want to change your life  is being assertive. Saying no when you mean no. Not letting people persuade you to do things you don’t want to do, or eat what you don’t want to eat.

Recognise what it is that you want and avoid doing things just because you don’t want to upset someone.

Learning to say no is vitally important. Be selfish because that is the way to look after yourself and when you do that you will begin to eat more healthily and exercise more too.

Lose weight without dieting

Is it possible for your weight to change by your mind-set rather than by restricting your intake according to diet rules? Is the reason diets don’t work because of your state of mind?

Start with your beliefs about weight and about thinness:

  • What would being slimmer mean to you?
  • How would your life change if you were slimmer?
  • What are you protecting yourself against?
  • How would other people peceive a slimmer you?

Questions to ask about change

Do you really want to change your life?

Of course you probably say, that’s why I’m interested in how to do this.

But do you really to change?

You see if you want a different life then you have to do something differently.

If you continue to eat too much, or eat unhealthy food, or fail to exercise then  you will then continue staying overweight or continue gaining weight.ver taking exercise then your fitness will diminish and will be a challenge to regain it.

If you persist in working long hours and not taking time off, then your life will be filled with work and become less and less balanced.

The outcome for not changing  may not show up immediately, except for an ongoing sense of despair and fed-upness. But  how you will be in twenty thirty or forty years time?

When you are eighty years old will you then turn around and  say, ‘OK now I’m ready. Now I have the time to eat more healthily, do more exercise and find other ways to respond to emotions instead of overeating. Would that work well for you?

Do you know how to change?

When you are totally sure you really do want to be more balanced, healthier and happier then you need to know how to do this.

I think you already know the formula for this: ‘change one thing at a time, one step at a time and the rest will follow.’

Are you ready?

So you know the true outcome you want and you know what to do, so now you must actually take the actions needed!

What’s stopping you?

What do you need to motivate yourself?

Some people find tremendous motivation from being accountable to a coach, or a buddy or a support group.

Also you could ask yourself the 4 important questions:

1. What will happen if I do?

2. What will happen if I don’t?

3. What won’t happen if I do?

4. What won’t happen if I don’t?

Location, location

Does where you are matter? I think so. Once you have got into the right mindset about what you are going to eat then it’s about where you are and whether what you want is available.

Home may be great or not depending on whether you do the shopping and cooking mainly! If you are depending on what meals you can buy then you may have all the good intentions and all the positive mind set but find that it’s chips with everything A couple of days ago I was at Womad which has been renamed WOMUD and was wary of what to buy, as I didn’t want to suffer from ‘Festival goers tummy’ Decided that Southern fried chicken and chips would be safe. I was hungry. I like that food (though not keen on chips often eat them if in front of me) Asked my self what do I want and the answer was ‘Ask for chicken without the chips’ She knocked of £2 from the price and I enjoyed my fried chicken pieces. Maybe it wasn’t the healthiest meal but it was what I wanted to eat. I gave myself a metaphorical pat on the back because I’d avoided a huge portion of chips!! There’s nothing quite like walking through deep mud to get your calf muscles working and keep the metabolism up and weight steady.
